What causes fear of the dentist?
Are you afraid of the dentist? This can have several causes. Usually the cause lies in the past. You may have seen or experienced something as a child that left an impression on you. This may have stayed with you (unconsciously), which is why you are now afraid to go to the dentist. Or perhaps you have heard stories from people around you about a bad experience at the dentist. It is sometimes difficult to explain how fear of the dentist arose. Whatever the explanation, our experienced anxiety dentist in Lelystad is ready to help you.
What should I do if I am afraid of the dentist?
Dental anxiety is more common in the Netherlands than you might think. About a quarter of people dread visiting the dentist. Some people suffer from extreme dental anxiety. As a result, they avoid the dentist. This can have unpleasant consequences, especially in the long term. If you avoid the dentist, dental problems cannot be diagnosed and treated by the dentist. That is why it is important to visit the dentist twice a year, no matter how exciting you find it.
But what should you do if you don't dare? We recommend that you call us prior to your appointment. Please let us know that you are looking forward to it. We will then take this into account as much as possible. We explain to you in advance what we are going to do, so that you know exactly what to expect from the treatment. Feel free to ask questions if something is unclear. Our anxiety dentist in Lelystad thinks no question is too crazy and is ready to answer all your questions, so that you feel at ease and undergo the treatment with peace of mind.
Fear of the dentist tips
Below you will find some tips if you are afraid to go to the dentist and are wondering what the best thing to do is. If you have any questions, please contact us by telephone. We are happy to help you.
- Talk to the dentist: It is important that you let the dentist know that you are afraid. If you inform the dentist about this, he can take this into account and make you as comfortable as possible. He will take extra time for the treatment and explain everything clearly.
- Go to the dentist prepared: Decide in advance what you do want, but especially what you absolutely do not want, and make this known to the dentist. Based on your preferences, the dentist makes a treatment plan. The dentist will discuss the treatment plan, which is tailor-made especially for you, in detail with you prior to the treatment, so that you know where you stand and will not be faced with any surprises.
- Find distraction: It can help to find distraction. For example, listen to your favorite music or read a book. This can help you shift your attention so that you are not busy with the treatment for a while. Before you know it, the treatment is finished again.
- Try relaxation techniques: Consider using breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. This can make you feel more comfortable in the dental chair and less concerned about the treatment.
- Bring someone: You are free to bring someone with you to your dental visit, if this helps you. Sometimes the presence of a trusted person can make the dental visit less exciting.
- Be treated under anesthesia: Within our practice it is possible to have you treated under anesthesia. Because you are treated while you sleep, you will not notice the treatment and will not experience any pain. This is experienced as pleasant by many people.
Under anesthesia at the dentist
At Flevo Tandarts, all dental treatments can be performed under anesthesia. Both children and adults can visit the dentist under anesthesia. For adults we charge €425 per 60 minutes for anesthesia. Anesthesia is free for children aged 8 to 17. The costs for the treatment itself are in addition to this. The rates are determined nationally every year by the Dutch Healthcare Authority. This means that all dentists in the Netherlands charge the same rates for treatments. In most cases, anesthesia is not reimbursed.
The anesthetist will administer the anesthesia, after which you will fall asleep. Because you are not conscious during the treatment, you will not notice this. We carry out all necessary treatments during your anesthesia, so that you only have to undergo anesthesia once. As soon as the treatment(s) are completed, we will wake you up and all your dental problems will be solved, without you even noticing.
Not everyone is eligible for dental treatment under anesthesia. We kindly ask you to complete a medical questionnaire prior to the treatment. This enables the anesthetist to make a good assessment of your health condition. If necessary, additional tests are carried out (such as blood tests) or information is requested from your GP or treating specialist. This is necessary to keep any risks for you as low as possible. Very satisfied!
I came to Flevo Dentists through an acquaintance.
Upon arrival I was kindly welcomed and treated nicely.
I was quite afraid of a dentist. But I felt at ease very quickly. And after the 1st treatment I no longer had any trouble going to the practice.
They made a treatment plan with me. And that has been duly fulfilled.
If you have any questions, you can always send us a message and they will respond quickly and clearly.
I am very happy with the service and definitely recommend it! Also for people with anxiety. (Definitely not necessary)!

After years, finally daring to take the step to go to the dentist again. Clear explanation during the intake and now I have had the necessary treatments (for me major) in 2 appointments. Due to the calm and personal approach, in the end it all turned out really well for me. Immediately made a new appointment, I dare again! 🙂

What does a fear dentist do?
An anxiety dentist is a dentist who specializes in treating anxious patients. Many people are afraid of going to the dentist. Some are so scared that they don't go at all. This can have unpleasant consequences. People who have a fear of the dentist can make an appointment with a fear dentist. An anxiety dentist takes more time for treatment than a regular dentist and gives you the feeling that you are in control. Everything is explained calmly and clearly in advance and there is room for questions before and during the treatment. The anxiety dentist in Lelystad is very experienced and will make you feel at ease.
Why a fearful dentist?
It is important to visit the dentist at least twice a year. During your visit, the dentist will check your teeth for any problems, which can be resolved immediately if desired. Do you have a fear of the dentist and that is why you have not been to the dentist in a while? Then you can go to a fear dentist. A dental fear will help you reduce your dental fear, so that you will never dread a visit to the dentist again. Take the first step towards healthy teeth and make an appointment.
Can I go to the dentist under anesthesia?
It is possible to be anesthetized or to undergo the treatment under general anesthesia. In our practice we use laughing gas to anesthetize you. This is also called laughing gas sedation. Nitrous oxide causes your perception to temporarily change, reducing tension and making you feel more comfortable. You can also be treated under general anesthesia. This means you will not notice anything during the treatment. When the treatment is complete, we will wake you up and you can go home with restored teeth.
